In my experience over the past decade I have run into many different green industry businesses. From big to small, good to bad, I have learned a lot from each of them that I encountered. I have seen those killing it by completely shifting their mindset when needed, to those that were killed by the recession because they could not pivot quickly enough. How did the successful companies do it and why did the other companies fail to do so? There are companies out there that are small, but very profitable simply by doing something different and controlling their growth. Why did they choose the path of staying small in a world that always promotes that ‘bigger is better’? There are companies around me that have been acquired and have some of the most brilliant guys come out of them only to start another company once they were allowed to do so. Why did they jump back into the game?
It is my intention to highlight the individuals that think differently and have a proven record of success. The word “GIANT” is often meant to describe a person of enormous physical stature. I promise you that none of the individuals I have met are any different looking than any of us. Also, I don’t mean this in strictly a monetary way either. Although some of the companies I met have done several million in revenue, there are many that do a lot less. So what makes any of them a “GIANT”? Well for me this is simply an acronym for those in the green industry that: Give Inspiration, Advice, News and Testimony by sharing the story of their companies. These individuals have a lot to offer and they are usually willing to help other companies. You just have to be willing to ask.
Running a landscape business myself I hope to share a lot of what I have discovered when it comes to managing and growing my company too. Throughout these years I feel like I have been a sponge soaking in everything that I can and I am still learning a lot. I believe the only way to get better is to learn from others, try out different things and even make some mistakes along the way. So this can be seen as a selfish endeavor, but I really believe it will add a lot of value to anyone looking to grow or even transform their company into what they want. It may even become a company that others emulate and look up to like a giant.
